Most Sunshine Coast residents drink tap water daily without giving it much thought. But questions about water quality come up regularly — especially from new residents, parents of young children, and people who've noticed a taste or smell they'd rather not have in their glass.
Here's a plain-English look at what's in your water, how it gets there, and what you can do about it.
Where Does Sunshine Coast Water Come From?
The Sunshine Coast's water supply comes primarily from two sources:
- Baroon Pocket Dam — a large surface water reservoir in the Blackall Range near Montville, fed by the Mary River headwaters
- Eudlo Creek — a river source supplemented during higher-flow periods
Water from these sources is treated at the Eudlo Water Treatment Plant before entering the distribution network that supplies Caloundra, Maroochydore, Buderim, Kawana Waters and surrounding areas.
How Is It Treated?
The treatment process includes:
- Coagulation and flocculation — chemicals added to clump fine particles together so they can be filtered out
- Sedimentation — particles allowed to settle before filtration
- Filtration — through sand and gravel media
- Chlorination — to disinfect and prevent microbial contamination throughout the distribution network
- Fluoridation — fluoride added at levels mandated by the Queensland Government for dental health
- pH adjustment — to reduce pipe corrosion and protect the network
What's the Water Hardness Like?
Sunshine Coast water is considered moderately soft to slightly hard, with hardness levels generally in the range of 30–80 mg/L (as calcium carbonate). This is relatively low compared to many parts of Australia, but still enough to cause minor scale build-up in appliances like kettles, shower heads, and hot water systems over time.
If you've noticed scale on your tap fittings or inside your kettle, that's normal for our area. A whole-house filtration system with a softening component can address this.
Is Sunshine Coast Water Safe to Drink?
Yes. Sunshine Coast Council water meets all requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG). Regular testing is conducted and results are publicly reported.
However, meeting guidelines and being perfectly pure are different things. The guidelines set maximum permissible levels for hundreds of parameters — but "permissible" doesn't mean zero. Chlorine, disinfection byproducts, and trace minerals are all present at low but detectable levels.
Common Complaints About Sunshine Coast Tap Water
- Chlorine taste and smell — the most frequent complaint. Chlorine is necessary for network safety but can affect taste, particularly if your home is close to a treatment point or in summer when higher doses are used.
- Discolouration — occasional brown or rusty water, usually caused by disturbance of sediment in the mains or in older pipes in your property.
- Fluoride concerns — some people prefer to reduce fluoride intake, particularly for infants. A reverse osmosis filter removes fluoride effectively.
What Can You Do About It?
For most people, a simple activated carbon under-sink filter will address the chlorine taste and smell effectively and economically. If you want to go further, a whole-house system or reverse osmosis unit is worth considering.
